Bolton v Blackburn, Yet Another Lancs Derby

By: Matilda | Comments Add Comments

gary_megson_1235180cSo how are you all after the international break? Miss watching our team lose and play horribly? Yeah me too. Luckily however this weekend we’re playing some neighbors who are in much the same habit, managed by dear old Big Sam (maybe that was too many adjectives for one guy?). Blackburn are on a run of ten straight losses in away games, however they haven’t lost at the Reebok
since 2001 (though really statistics like that don’t mean that much). To see a few more meaningless statistics mixed in with some important ones, see the BBC’s preview.

It should be a fairly even game, and has the potential to be quite dismal. Both sides are essentially full strength (Bolton are missing out on Sean Davis and Joey O’Brien), but really Bolton’s full strength is nothing to talk about. Jlloyd Samuel, whose form this season has been dubious at best, returns to us from his silly suspension. As you may be able to tell I am still in a bad mood from our last three games.

News Round Up

By: Matilda | Comments Add Comments

Sorry I haven’t been around lately, it’s been a bit hectic over here recently. Luckily it was an international break and nothing much happened in my absence, but I now dutifully bring you what did.

As you may have read in TheSpoiler (highly recommended by the way), Darius Vassell, ex-Man City striker, has been experience a few bumps over in Turkey. First off he only scores 2 goals in 7 games (admittedly a far better record than our dear Elmander’s), then he gets kicked out of his hotel because the club Ankaragucu failed to pay the bill. According to News of the World, he’s eying a move back to England, perhaps to Bolton. Well you’ve got to feel sorry for the guy, things must be bad if Bolton is an escape.

Villa Game: Can We Just Forget That Ever Happened?

By: Matilda | Comments 1 Comment

Well I’m sure you’ve seen the score by now. I don’t really have the heart to repeat it. You may have noted that this is incredibly late. As I said previously I had to visit England to visit my dying grandmother (she passed late Monday night), I got home yesterday at midnight Texas time, 6 AM my body clock time, after no less than 24 hours of traveling. I’m still utterly exhausted, emotionally and physically. So I hope you will forgive me for not doing a write up, I can’t even bring myself to watch the highlights right now. I’ll link you to this video and leave it at that.

I’m sure my optimism will resurrect itself soon enough with the phoenix-like qualities necessary for any Bolton fan, but the international break is definitely welcome at this point. I’ll be back later in the week with a news round up, and any news of our internationally-inclined Trotters, I’m off to sleep away the pain!

Aston Villa v. Bolton

By: Matilda | Comments Add Comments

7004013So this is probably the earliest I’ve ever done a match report (3 whole days in advance) and so I can’t link you to the BBC statistics report. You’ll just have to go find it yourself, it’ll be on this page probably by Saturday. Like I said a little earlier, I’m going over to England and won’t have internet until I get back (I’m staying at my grandmother’s house and she doesn’t allow any technology made after 1972 in), so don’t expect any new posts from me until Tuesday at the earliest (there there love, don’t pine, you can always go through my archives or go read some of my posts on England World Cup Blog if you miss me too much).

On to football, Aston Villa won’t be easy opposition. They’re 7 points ahead of us in the table however their last three results LDD. Just this past Wednesday they lost to West Ham, who we beat not so long ago. They’ve hit a bit of a rut in form, however their squad will be smarting from the defeat and will be welcoming Bolton with something to prove.

Video: Story Time with Matt Taylor

By: Matilda | Comments Add Comments

The one and only Matty Taylor spins us a little yarn on why young boys should not be allowed to have nice cars. I highly recommend checking out the extensive Channelbee Football section. Many hilarious videos.

News Round Up

By: Matilda | Comments 4 Comments

Some pretty pedestrian stuff so far this week, perhaps everyone still in shock after our thrashing on Saturday. First of all a surprising statistic has been released: Bolton’s attendances rose last season by 8%, one of only two clubs to see a rise in attendance. I don’t know if you noticed but last season (and more so this current season) the Reebok has been looking strikingly empty. Perhaps it was just even emptier before that.

In the same report Burnden Leisure plc (Bolton’s parent company) has announced a loss of £13.2mil for the past fiscal year. This rose from their losses the previous year by £5mil. Hopefully this won’t affect the club too much, though it definitely isn’t a good sign.

Also the American pop star Pink will be visiting the Reebok and giving a conecert (I told you the news was pedestrian!). So if you live in/around Bolton and like Pink be sure to get your tickets. The woman’s completely mad (as evidenced here and here) So I suppose we should just all hope she doesn’t tear up the pitch too much.

Anyway I should be back tomorrow doing the match preview. I’m not sure if I’ll get the chance to do a report, as I’m flying to England on Friday and won’t really have internet until I come back to the States (which is not a fixed date as of now).

Guest Post: The Chelsea Game

By: Matilda | Comments 3 Comments

loftyAs I mentioned earlier, my father was at the Chelsea game this past Saturday. I had him write my a little guest blog, and as promised here it is.
I arrived at the Reebok in gentle late afternoon sunshine. No, that’s not a joke. In fact, you can tell that the stadium was not built with sunshine in mind, since for the first half an hour or so I was there, it was shining directly into my eyes (at first I was so surprised by the unaccustomed glow I thought Wigan must be on fire – no such luck, however), making it hard to concentrate on the cheerleaders. But then again, that might be a deliberate design feature.

I first experienced (there is no more precise word) the Reebok Rebels about three years ago. My jaw has been in a state of near-permanent downward dislocation ever since. I have nothing against cheerleaders in theory. Indeed, I have often wished I had several things against them in practice. But just as there are some things that shouldn’t be attempted in Texas (fish and chips, meat pies, a decent pint), the same applies in reverse. Cheerleaders are one of them. The girl directly in front of me swayed listlessly to series of dreadful 70s disco tracks; but at least she wasn’t bedraggled, as they usually are (and take it from me, the wet look does not suit Bolton cheerleaders). She was wearing what looked like a badly torn bin liner, but, then looking down the line of unco-ordinated lovelies, I realised they were all in similar outfits. After three numbers, my cheerleader (sorry, dancer) began to look distinctly distressed – her breathing became obviously laboured, she struggled to raise her perfectly Horwich-tanned leg above ground level, and could barely lift her pom-pom in the general direction of Rivington. It occurred to me that Sir Alex might like to weigh in on this disgraceful failure of fitness….

Déjà Effing Vu (Chelsea Beat Us Again)

By: Matilda | Comments Add Comments

Cahill v DrogbaIt has been dawning on me slowly but surely that supporting Bolton is like being in an abusive relationship. Every weekend they hurt me and then I go through several stages. First I’m angry with them, I question our relationship and whether it’s worth it. Then I begin to start qualifying and saying to myself “Well, it wasn’t too bad,” I convince myself they’ll change. And so I go back and watch the game next week with high hopes, only to repeat the exact same cycle.I’m sure everyone who supports a non-Big Four club goes through the exact same process.

Bolton v. Chelsea OR Oh, It’s You Again

By: Matilda | Comments 2 Comments
Yes Kevin dear, you are number 1.

Yes Kevin dear, you are number 1.

Hello again, it seems as though I’ve been posting a lot lately, to match the Trotter’s busy schedule. Chelsea will be paying us a visit this Saturday, a mere 72 hours after we saw them last. And trust me, I haven’t missed them. Here’s a link to the BBC’s preview of the match. They’re not overly optimistic for Bolton’s plight.

News Round Up

By: Matilda | Comments Add Comments

jussiFirst, and most importantly, there is some sad news for the Wanderers World. Our dear Jussi is retiring from his international career. His Finnish team failed to make South Africa 2010, and Jaaskelainen announced his retirement earlier today. He was first capped in 1998, and has earned 55 since. Jussi, pure class as ever, came out with this statement:
