Aston Villa v. Bolton
By: Matilda |
So this is probably the earliest I’ve ever done a match report (3 whole days in advance) and so I can’t link you to the BBC statistics report. You’ll just have to go find it yourself, it’ll be on this page probably by Saturday. Like I said a little earlier, I’m going over to England and won’t have internet until I get back (I’m staying at my grandmother’s house and she doesn’t allow any technology made after 1972 in), so don’t expect any new posts from me until Tuesday at the earliest (there there love, don’t pine, you can always go through my archives or go read some of my posts on England World Cup Blog if you miss me too much).
On to football, Aston Villa won’t be easy opposition. They’re 7 points ahead of us in the table however their last three results LDD. Just this past Wednesday they lost to West Ham, who we beat not so long ago. They’ve hit a bit of a rut in form, however their squad will be smarting from the defeat and will be welcoming Bolton with something to prove.

Video: Story Time with Matt Taylor
By: Matilda |The one and only Matty Taylor spins us a little yarn on why young boys should not be allowed to have nice cars. I highly recommend checking out the extensive Channelbee Football section. Many hilarious videos.
News Round Up
By: Matilda |Some pretty pedestrian stuff so far this week, perhaps everyone still in shock after our thrashing on Saturday. First of all a surprising statistic has been released: Bolton’s attendances rose last season by 8%, one of only two clubs to see a rise in attendance. I don’t know if you noticed but last season (and more so this current season) the Reebok has been looking strikingly empty. Perhaps it was just even emptier before that.
In the same report Burnden Leisure plc (Bolton’s parent company) has announced a loss of £13.2mil for the past fiscal year. This rose from their losses the previous year by £5mil. Hopefully this won’t affect the club too much, though it definitely isn’t a good sign.
Also the American pop star Pink will be visiting the Reebok and giving a conecert (I told you the news was pedestrian!). So if you live in/around Bolton and like Pink be sure to get your tickets. The woman’s completely mad (as evidenced here and here) So I suppose we should just all hope she doesn’t tear up the pitch too much.
Anyway I should be back tomorrow doing the match preview. I’m not sure if I’ll get the chance to do a report, as I’m flying to England on Friday and won’t really have internet until I come back to the States (which is not a fixed date as of now).
Guest Post: The Chelsea Game
By: Matilda |
As I mentioned earlier, my father was at the Chelsea game this past Saturday. I had him write my a little guest blog, and as promised here it is.
I arrived at the Reebok in gentle late afternoon sunshine. No, that’s not a joke. In fact, you can tell that the stadium was not built with sunshine in mind, since for the first half an hour or so I was there, it was shining directly into my eyes (at first I was so surprised by the unaccustomed glow I thought Wigan must be on fire – no such luck, however), making it hard to concentrate on the cheerleaders. But then again, that might be a deliberate design feature.
I first experienced (there is no more precise word) the Reebok Rebels about three years ago. My jaw has been in a state of near-permanent downward dislocation ever since. I have nothing against cheerleaders in theory. Indeed, I have often wished I had several things against them in practice. But just as there are some things that shouldn’t be attempted in Texas (fish and chips, meat pies, a decent pint), the same applies in reverse. Cheerleaders are one of them. The girl directly in front of me swayed listlessly to series of dreadful 70s disco tracks; but at least she wasn’t bedraggled, as they usually are (and take it from me, the wet look does not suit Bolton cheerleaders). She was wearing what looked like a badly torn bin liner, but, then looking down the line of unco-ordinated lovelies, I realised they were all in similar outfits. After three numbers, my cheerleader (sorry, dancer) began to look distinctly distressed – her breathing became obviously laboured, she struggled to raise her perfectly Horwich-tanned leg above ground level, and could barely lift her pom-pom in the general direction of Rivington. It occurred to me that Sir Alex might like to weigh in on this disgraceful failure of fitness….

Déjà Effing Vu (Chelsea Beat Us Again)
By: Matilda |
It has been dawning on me slowly but surely that supporting Bolton is like being in an abusive relationship. Every weekend they hurt me and then I go through several stages. First I’m angry with them, I question our relationship and whether it’s worth it. Then I begin to start qualifying and saying to myself “Well, it wasn’t too bad,” I convince myself they’ll change. And so I go back and watch the game next week with high hopes, only to repeat the exact same cycle.I’m sure everyone who supports a non-Big Four club goes through the exact same process.

Bolton v. Chelsea OR Oh, It’s You Again
By: Matilda |
Yes Kevin dear, you are number 1.
Hello again, it seems as though I’ve been posting a lot lately, to match the Trotter’s busy schedule. Chelsea will be paying us a visit this Saturday, a mere 72 hours after we saw them last. And trust me, I haven’t missed them. Here’s a link to the BBC’s preview of the match. They’re not overly optimistic for Bolton’s plight.

News Round Up

First, and most importantly, there is some sad news for the Wanderers World. Our dear Jussi is retiring from his international career. His Finnish team failed to make South Africa 2010, and Jaaskelainen announced his retirement earlier today. He was first capped in 1998, and has earned 55 since. Jussi, pure class as ever, came out with this statement:

Chelsea 4-0 Bolton
By: Matilda |
I haven’t been able to find highlights but I did find a video of all four goals. The emotionally unstable amongst us may not want to watch it as it’s pretty depressing. As my father said the only positive thing to take away from that match is the fact that we can’t do any worse on Saturday. Now I must say I didn’t really expect a win, I don’t think any Wanderer did, but 4-0? Really? We’re better than that.

Carling Cup Exit
By: Matilda |I was unable to watch the game today because I had to write a history essay (though the game probably would have been just as painful). I’ve just been reading some reports (as of now no video is out) and things don’t look good do they? Even Gary Megson called us crap and he barely ever does that (even though we quite often are crap). A few preliminary thoughts (I’ll do a better report later):
Are Kevin Davies and Jussi Jaaskelainen two of the four suffering from swine flu? Ali Al Habsi started in goal and was never replaced, unless Jussi picked up something in training that I’m unaware of I can’t really think of another reason why he didn’t start. Super Kev wasn’t even on the bench. Any fool knows how important he is to Bolton. Megson waved away his absence with talk of stitches, but if I know Kevin Davies, he would let a couple (well five to be exact) of facial stitches stop him from playing against such quality of opposition. My guess is that both are/were sick and are saving up their energy for the game against Chelsea that actually matters this weekend.
Are Bolton slipping back into their Jekyll and Hyde skin again? After a fairly consistent October it appears that Bolton have crashed an burned again. Is this a sign that they’ll go back to their on/off playing last season that infuriated me so?
It seems that two of Bolton’s most promising players were left staring at their laces their whole game. Why on earth would the Ginger One leave Lee Chung-Yong and Tamir Cohen, both quality goal makers, on the bench at half time? Are they sick as well or his he resting them? Or is he just mad?
That’s about all I have for now. A lot of questions. In case you couldn’t tell I am feeling downcast about this game. Hopefully the highlights will give me something to smile about when I watch them. Report to come later. Also best of luck to Hilario who is undergoing tests after he was taken off for a concussion caused by a Matt Taylor ball from close range. I hope its not anything too serious.
Swine Has Struck
By: Matilda |
Reports have come out that 4 players at the club have contracted the dreaded swine. However Megson refuses to reveal who the players in question are. Now of course I’m not worried about them dropping dead or anything, but the swine flu is still the flu, and can be quite debilitating if you want to, say, chase up and down after a ball for 90 minutes. I can only hope that the four players are Adam Bogdan Danny Shittu, Danny Ward, and Ricardo Vaz Te. So a note to all Wanderers: take plenty of vitamins and try to avoid contact with your teammates/anyone in the human race/pigs. Also try to infect a few Chelsea players tomorrow night, so they’re sick for the game on Saturday! To our mystery four: get better soon, loves!
