Gary Cahill Out for the Season
By: Matilda |
Well today really hasn’t been my day, and to top it all off I found out about Gary Cahill. Our top defender, and one of our best players over all will be out for the rest of the season. Needless to say I am completely gutted. He has a blood clot in his arm, so he will be going on blood thinners, meaning he can risk any injury, and certainly can’t tackle as he could die from internal bleeding. It also basically kills his World Cup chances, as he will in all likelihood be nowhere near match fit when June rolls around, and there’s a lot of competition for that central defender position. If we’ve been conceding so many goals with our best defender, I’m severely worried about our goal difference without him.
Anyway I’m having some internet issues again, and so can’t type up a Fulham report, or a City preview, but I’ll do my best to get a City report up, and catch up on the back log. We’ll see how that turns out.
Photo Album: Newbies at Training
By: Matilda |OK so I was just inspired by a post over at the excellent Somewhere From the North. And no, I’m not just saying excellent because I’m on his blog roll, I really do think it’s excellent. But the fact that the man’s got taste doesn’t hurt either. Anyway I was reading an article in which he linked to an article on the official BWFC site. Now considering that the site is crap, I only go there to buy tickets or confirm transfers, but I may just have discovered a goldmine. They have pictures. Lots of them. And I found the cutest picture of all time. Seriously, I squealed when I saw it (I’m guessing your reaction was slightly different Quentin). So I may or may not (depending on if I can ever brave the BWFC site again) start a little feature called Photo Album with pictures of our wonderful players in action. We’ll see. Anyway here’s this

That’s right ladies and gents, Bolton is too cheap to buy all three of their new players sweatshirts and shirts, so they’ll just have to share one shirt between them. I sense an entertaining game of musical shirts, better start working on those six-packs boys. I know, I sound like a predator.
Clearly only Stu got the Make-A-Cool-Guy-Face memo. Also is it just me or do Weiss and Wilshere look frighteningly similar from this angle?

And we crescendo with The Cutest Picture of All Time. England teammate and mentor (ok maybe not mentor, I just couldn’t resist) Gary Cahill gives Jack a lift. Aaaaawwww.

And just so we don’t all die of cuteness-overload I’m popping in a picture of Coyle to counteract the last one. Too harsh? Sorry Owen, I love you nonetheless.
News Round Up: FA Cup, New Stu’s Health, and Coyle Gets Crafty Over Cahill
By: Matilda |Title writing is so much easier when I’ve consumed obscene amounts of coffee! And that’s my way of saying “sorry I know it’s obnoxious, I just can’t help it.” Anyway there’s been some news and I’m here to round it up for you. Off we go.
First off we will be inviting Tottenham to the Reebok on Valentines Day for a good, old fashioned, FA Cup match. This fixture is always a bit of a test for me since I also have a little Spurs in me. My family’s from Bolton, but my dad grew up in Tottenham, and it was his childhood club. Of course I will be hoping for a Wanderers victory, it’s just a little harder. Only a little.

Transfer Window Wrap Up
By: Matilda |That’s right Owen Coyle, you can no longer have that little puppy dog in the window. This was not Bolton’s best Transfer Window ever, but considering the circumstances I’m quite pleased. First of all everyone was frugal this year, and Owen Coyle came in a little late, and didn’t have that much time to assess the squad and purchaser what he needed. We fired our manager at the exact wrong time (in the crucial post-Christmas, pre-Transfer period), and we could only expect so much out of Coyle. I would have liked a central defender to put the fire under Knight’s bum a little bit but ah well, shall we go over what we have?

Liverpool 2-0 Bolton
By: Matilda |Well um that was a wee bit disappointing. As you may have read I had high hopes coming into this match. I even taunted one of my Scouse friends on Friday, telling him he better get himself ready to share the points. On Saturday evening he replied “Hehehehehehehe.” This was obviously rather disappointing, as Vital Bolton said: “There wasn’t much to write about regarding Bolton’s defeat at Liverpool. Perform fairly well in the first half. Concede a rubbish goal. Don’t turn up for the second half. End of summary.” I mentioned in my preview that maybe, just maybe, we could end our 56 year not-winning streak at Anfield, and that I thought we should be able to get points off of them. Oh well. This isn’t the worst defeat ever.
The obvious issue with Liverpool this season has been their inconsistency. Before the season started I was backing them to be big title contenders, saying maybe this is their season, and some games they have looked like a Premiership winning team. But there have been those pesky days when they don’t even look like a Championship winning team, including the game right before Bolton’s, a goalless draw at Molineux.
Unfortunately Wolves faced a very different Liverpool team than Bolton got, and i have complete faith that if Bolton had played that game we would’ve gone home with 3 points in our pockets. But we got a good Liverpool (at least in spurts) and we didn’t play very well ourselves. In the end, as Coyle rightly points out:
“The games against Liverpool and Arsenal won’t be the ones we have to win in order to stay up. We can get those extra points from them, but we have to beat the teams in and around us.”
Still, I know on our day we could beat Liverpool (providing it wasn’t also their day of course). I’m moving on form this game, as we have a very important fixture this weekend against Fulham at the Reebok. I think this will be a real test to see what the “new” Bolton will be. Coyle’s had aout a month with the team, the chance to make some new signings, and already faced some tough opposition. Fulham are an alright team, by no means poor, but also a team that we have a good chances of beating if we play the way I know we can. Anyway I’ll be back with a Transfer Month wrap-up, and preview later in the week, til then.
News Round Up: Fresh Blood, and Coyle Makes a Funny
By: Matilda |Wa-hey! It looked like it wasn’t happening after the two heated games against Arsenal, but the deal was signed this morning, and Jack Wilshere is coming to the Reebok. In other transfer news Bolton have also secured Vladimir Weiss and Stuart Holden. all of these transfers are excellent and they all have something that’s currently not there at Bolton: youth, speed, and creativity. I’ve had my eye on Holden for a while, he puts in great crosses, and Davies and Klasnic could do with some service. Unfortunately he has a thigh injury and won’t be able to play this Saturday, but we will have Wilshere and Weiss.
In more mundane news, several fixtures have been confirmed. We will be facing Wigan (Premiership) on Wednesday February 17th, and we will be facing Suprs/Leeds (FA Cup, subject to a replay) on Valentines Day (awww) at home. And lastly after the myriad accusations of being a Judas by Burnley, Owen Coyle comes out and hits them right back with another biblical reference.
“If they were going to get biblical it should probably have been Moses, because I was the one who led them from the wilderness,”
Good one Owen.
Liverpool v. Bolton,
By: Matilda |
I actually got to attend this fixture last season. It was Boxing Day, and I traveled up from nearby Chorley (where my gran lived) via the supporters bus. There were only about 2000 of us Bolton fans against a fairly full Anfield, but we sang the whole time (despite losing) and left in high spirits. It was a great game. Anyway, this time it’s a whole different story. Last season Liverpool were challenging for the title and this season their fighting for the Champions League.

Bolton 1-0 Burnley OR So That’s What a Clean Sheet Looks Like
By: Matilda |
That right ladies and gents, it may have taken us all season, 2 managers, and 29 (that number’s not quite right but it’s damn close) games, but we did not let a single goal in over 90 minutes. That’s right, not even one. I was beginning to think it impossible, but that Owen Coyle clearly knows what he’s on about. And trust me, if you were expecting the Burnley fans to be a little bitter, then they didn’t disappoint. Here’s a link to the highlights in case you missed the match.

Bolton v. Burnley
By: Matilda |Sorry it completely slipped my mind to do a preview until I was idly checking NewsNow and saw how everyone and their dog has already done their preview. Oops. So, with kick-off in just about 4 hours, I’ll churn one out quickly, along with my apologies.

Bolton 2-0 Sheffield United, Bolton Beat Blunt Blades
By: Matilda |
Ok sorry for the obnoxious alliteration in the title, I couldn’t help myself. Really. I didn’t watch the game because it was my cousin’s birthday and I had family obligations, but it doesn’t sound like I missed too much. I couldn’t find any highlights, but they’d probably be about 30 seconds long anyways.
The first half sounded fairly dreadful, with neither team looking much good, and both having shots that really should have been goals. Henri Camara, by all accounts, should have done better with a shot that produced a comfortable save from Jaaskelainen. On the Bolton side of things both Jlloyd (playing on the left, unusual for him) and Klasnic should have scored but didn’t.
Coyle told his players at half-time to be “less one-dimensional” (which you would really hope Premiership players would get on their own, but oh well) and after the break they did just that. Defender Gretar Steinsson hit the ball home off a pass from Sheffield-native Kevin Davies in the 48th minute, in his maiden FA Cup goal. From there Bolton looked fair comfortable, and Johan Elmander sealed the deal in the 84th minute, just 8 minutes after appearing as a substitute.
Not much was very interesting about this game, though Coyle did have a bit of fun with the line up. He put Ricketts, generally a defender, in the midfield, which I think is a good place for him, as he’s pretty good at going forward but fairly crap at defending. Jlloyd got the start ahead of Paul Robinson, who has been the preferred left-back this season. Personally I think Jlloyd is better than Robinson, but rumour has it that Jlloyd and Megson got in a tiff, hence his presence on the bench.
That’s all I’m going to write on that game, it may have been a mediocre win, but a win is a win and we’re still in a competition that 3 out of the 4 big teams are out of (Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United for those of you unawares). I’ll be back later in the week for some news-rounding-up.
